Wizards of the Coast has announced it will end a play format in Magic: The Gathering Arena. The Alchemy format, a digital-only format for the digital version of the iconic card game, will end shortly after the launch of the latest set, Reality Fracture.

The End of the Alchemy Format on Magic: The Gathering Arena

In an official blog post, Wizards of the Coast announced it is retiring the Alchemy format in early 2027. The post then explained why this play format is getting the axe. It notes that Alchemy started in 2021 to make more original cards and content for Magic: The Gathering Arena. The solution at the time was small 30-card sets released alongside major physical releases, with the kind of mechanics and ideas only possible in a digital card game.

But things change. When Alchemy first launched, about four to five sets were released for Magic: The Gathering every year. That number has increased to six per year; 2026 alone contains Secrets of Strixhaven, Lorwyn Eclipsed, and three Universes Beyond sets featuring The Hobbit, Marvel Super Heroes, and Star Trek. That is a considerable increase in development, especially when managing work based on other intellectual property.

Wizards of the Coast also cites the fact that Magic: The Gathering Arena has plenty of nonrotating play formats outside of Standard available. Essentially, Alchemy is now a solution to a problem that has solved itself.

As such, the following changes will be rolled out. First, on September 22, over 200 rebalanced cards will return to their original printing across all formats; perfectly aligning with their physical versions. Second, on October 13, 2026, Alchemy: Reality Fracture will launch alongside sendoff events for the Alchemy format, including a massive preconstructed deck event.

Lastly, on February 2, 2027, the Alchemy format will be removed from Arena with 2027's rotation alongside the prerelease of Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. All digital only cards from Alchemy will still be playable in Historic, Timeless, Brawl, and Competitive Brawl formats.
