The Resident Evil 4 remake was apparently planned to include a fun reference to the eighth mainline game in the franchise, Resident Evil Village. It would have looped back around to the RE4 Easter egg that was found in Village, but for unknown reasons, it was not used in the final version.
Per RENews on X, a modder known as Keff0 was able to recover nearly 700 finished voice lines that were ultimately unused in the final release of the Resident Evil 4 remake. One such line was said by the Merchant, with the character stating, "Ah, I see you're no stranger to villages. The Duke? Lad shows promise." The Duke is the character in Village who serves a similar role in the game as the Merchant, as he buys and sells items to the player. This further shows how the Merchant and the Duke are familiar with one another.
The Merchant Was Going to Reference the Duke
This would be a direct response to the RE4 reference in Village. The Duke can be heard saying, "What are you buying? Just something an old friend of mine used to say." This is clearly referring to the merchant from RE4, who would always memorably ask Leon the familiar phrase, "What are you buying?" Having the remake's version of the merchant then commenting on the Duke could have been a fun wink back to Village, but for reasons unknown, the line was scrapped during production.
Much of the other uncovered voice lines appear to be mostly inconsequential. However, Keff0 was also able to rebuild a complete character who was not featured in the final game. Named Yuri, his model was found in the PC version of the Resident Evil 4 remake, but it did not include textures. The original textures were later discovered on the PS5 disc, unveiling what the mysterious Yuri character actually looked like. It's not known for sure where and how Yuri was planned to be used before the character was nixed.
Capcom Continues to Remake Resident Evil Classics
Released in 2023, the Resident Evil 4 remake reimagined the original game from 2005. It was released to great success, becoming one of the fastest-selling titles in the history of the Capcom franchise. The remake was also nominated for multiple Game of the Year awards. As with the original, it had players taking control of Leon Kennedy as the former Raccoon City cop embarked on a mission to rescue the president's daughter from a mysterious cult and horrific creatures.
The mainline games are still coming, with this year's Resident Evil Requiem becoming an instant hit upon release. Still, Capcom is further exploring the older titles of the franchise with more remakes. The next one on the list is Resident Evil Veronica, a new take on 2000's Code: Veronica. It is set to be released in 2027.
