8BitDo’s Ultimate 3E Is A Modular Xbox Controller Built For Competitive Play

8BitDo is pushing its Xbox controller lineup further with the Ultimate 3E, a new gamepad that combines TMR thumbsticks, Hall-effect triggers, hot-swappable controls, rear paddles, and a 1,000Hz polling rate. Already available in the US, pre-orders are now open in Europe and the UK, with the controller targeting players who want considerably more control over their gamepad than a standard Xbox controller provides.

The Ultimate 3E is officially licensed for Xbox and works with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One through low-latency 2.4GHz wireless or wired connections. On PC, it supports the same 2.4GHz and wired options, while Bluetooth connectivity extends compatibility to iOS, iPadOS, and Android devices.

The Ultimate 3E is makes the move to TMR, or Tunneling Magnetoresistance, sensors for the thumbsticks. Like Hall-effect technology, TMR replaces traditional potentiometers with magnetic sensors. 8BitDo says its implementation delivers sub-millimeter precision, improved stability, and greater power efficiency. The company also says the sticks eliminate the drift associated with conventional potentiometers.

Of course, precision is only useful if the controller fits the player, and that is where the Ultimate 3E gets interesting. Its magnetic faceplate and modular system allow users to swap the ABXY module between silicone membrane and tactile micro-switch options. The D-pad can also be changed between circular and classic designs, while three combinations of stick heights and caps are included.

The triggers use Hall-effect sensors and feature adjustable rumble along with physical two-stage trigger stops. Competitive shooters should benefit from the shorter trigger throw, while players who prefer a traditional trigger response can leave the stops disengaged.

There are also two remappable rear paddles and L4/R4 shoulder buttons, giving players additional inputs without taking their thumbs off the sticks. PC gamers get up to a 1,000Hz polling rate and six-axis gyro motion control.

A built-in 3.5mm headset jack includes dedicated volume and microphone mute controls. The included charging dock also houses the 2.4GHz receiver, giving the Ultimate 3E somewhere to live when it isn’t busy making your thumbs work overtime.

Pre-orders are available now, with the 8BitDo Ultimate 3E scheduled to launch across Europe and the UK on October 23 for €139.99/£119.99.
